(1804-1873), of Massachusetts, manufacturer. His firm carried on an enormous business in the manufacture of shovels, especially in the early days of the gold-finding in California and Australia. They had a large interest in the building of the Union Pacific Railroad, which they transferred to the Credit Mobilier. He was a member of Congress from 1862 to 1873. He was censured by the House for his connection with the Credit Mobilier scandal.
