The dactylic semipentameter,much used by Archilochus of Paros, circ. 700 B.C. ; said to be the earliest Greek lyrist, and to have invented iambic verse ; bitter and satirical ; hence "Archilochian bitterness," and " Parian verse " (Horace, Art. Poet., 79).
