An eminent Hungarian novelist and publicist; born at Magyar-Kapud, 1816; died at Puszta-Kamaras, Dec. 22, 1875. His romances and political writings are classics in Hungarian literature. Of the former, "Man and Wife" (1852) and "The Abysses of the Heart" (1854), both psychological studies, are among the best. "Studies" (2 vols., 1870) is an admirable work. The style of his writings and the tax they impose on thought make them not always easy to read, but what they demand they amply repay in pleasure and profit. He was called "prince of the Magyar journalists".
