(1636-1701), was an English politician, appointed by William III. Governor of New York and Massachusetts in 1695. He arrived in 1698, and addressed himself to the suppression of piracy and illegal trade, both rife in the colonies. The capture of the notorious pirate Captain Kidd fell during his administration.
