(1810-1883), of Pennsylvania, jurist, was one of the Judges of its Supreme Court from 1851 to 1857, became Attorney-General under Buchanan, serving as such till December, 1860, when he became his Secretary of State and exerted himself to save the government from falling into the hands of the secessionists. In 1861 and 1862 he was reporter of the U. S. Supreme Court.
