A brief but severe engagement, July 5, 1861, between 12,000 Union troops under General Franz Sigel and 5000 Confederates, chiefly volunteers from Missouri, Texas and Arkansas, led by Generals Price, McCulloch and Pillow. General Sigel was compelled to retreat, although victorious.
