A substitution compound, QH4- (OH) (CH3 ), of benzin. It has three isomeric varieties: orthocresol; metacresol; paracresol. C. is a very active antiseptic and disinfectant, but it has the disadvantage of being insoluble in water, hence it is used in combination with soap [U. S. Ph.]. See liquor cresolis compositus.
