A four days' fight between Johnston's and Sherman's armies, during the latter's advance upon Atlanta in 1864. The fighting took place May 25 to 29. The Confederates, about 40,000 strong, were under the immediate command of Hardee, and lay entrenched about Dallas. McPherson attacked them with 20,000 Federals. Schofield was ordered to flank the Confederate right, but as he made this attempt Johnston himself struck heavily upon McPherson's main command. However, the Federals moved to the left along the Confederate front and gained the Allatoona Pass. Johnston was thus forced to leave his intrenchments and retire, May 29.
