One of the most prolific of American novelists; born in Washington, D. C., Dec. 26, 1818; died there June 30, 1899. Among her sixty-odd stories are: "Retribution"; "Unknown"; "The Family Doom"; "The Mother's Secret"; and "An Exile's Bride". Many of them have been translated into French, German and Spanish, and republished in London, Paris, Leipsic, Madrid and Montreal.
