An epithet applied by Dr. Marshall Hall to a division of the nervous system-comprising the gray matter of the spinal marrow, with the afferent and efferent nerves connected with it ;-all of which are concerned in reflex actions; or those by which impressions are transmitted to a centre, and reflected so as to produce muscular contraction without sensation or volition.
