Syn.: transitory benign plaques of the tongue. A disease of the mucous membrane of the tongue characterized by round or gyrate patches of a reddish color denuded of epithelium, and surrounded by a narrow border of yellowish, apparently thickened epithelium. The disease has been most commonly observed in children, but occurs also in adults. It differs from leukoplakia buccalis chiefly in the tendency of patches to change rapidly from place to place and to disappear suddenly.
