A city having an independent government of its own and virtually forming a state by itself: a name given to certain cities, principally of Germany, which were really small republics, directly connected with the German Empire, and hence often called Imperial Cities. They were once numerous, but are now reduced to three, viz., Hamburg, Lubeck, and Bremen.
