The systematic name of the Mangostan, Mangaustan, Mangostine or Mangosteen tree, Mangostana. It grows in great abundance in Java and the Molucca islands. The fruit, which is about the size of an orange, is delicious, and is eaten in almost every disorder. The dried bark is used medicinally in dysentery and tenesmus; and a strong decoction has been much esteemed in ulcerated sore throat.
