The liver has never been found entirely out of the abdominal cavity. Increase of its bulk, or injuries of the parietes of the abdomen, have been the sole cause of the protrusions which have been occasionally met with, especially in infants, in whom the upper part of the linea alba is very weak, and indeed scarcely seems to exist. Sauvages has distinguished two species of hepatocele: -the ventral (in the linea alba), and the umbilical or hepatomphalum.
