A white, crystalline substance, C8H7N, obtained from blue indigo, and almost all indigo derivatives, by a process of reduction. It is also formed from albuminous matter, together with skatol, by putrefaction, and by fusion with caustic potash, and is present in human excrement, as well as in the intestinal canal of some herbivora.

-
A crystalline substance, C8H7N, produced by the reduction of indigo due to the combined action of trypsin and bacteria upon proteids in intestinal digestion. It is the cause in part of the specific odor of the feces. When accumulating in the intestines (as in intestinal obstruction) it produces a large discharge of indican in the urine.

-
A heterocyclic compound derived from tryptophane by putrefaction in the intestines. It is a combination of the benzene and the pyrrol rings. It is excreted partly in the feces to which it gives odor and, after absorption, partly in the urine as indican.

- An inorganic water-soluble platinum complex. After undergoing hydrolysis, it reacts DNA produce both intra interstrand crosslinks. These crosslinks appear to impair replication and transcription of DNA. The cytotoxicity cisplatin correlates with cellular arrest in G2 phase cell cycle.
