These are almost entirely fleshy, and ten in number; five on each side. They are similar to the preceding in general arrangement; except that they are more marked, and not placed in two rows. Each intertransverse space contains only one. They are quadrilateral, and flat. The first occupies the space between the transverse processes of the first lumbar and the last dorsal vertebrae; and the last is between that of the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae. These muscles incline the lumbar region laterally; and straighten it when inclined to one side.
