An American prose-writer; born in Walton, N. Y., Dec. 30, 1813; died at Newburgh, Jan. 16, 1897. Graduating from Union College in 1846, he became assistant editor of the New York Tribune. His writings had great currency in their day, and include: "Napoleon and his Marshals" (1846); "Washington and his Generals" (1847); "Grant and Sherman, their Campaigns and Generals" (1865); and "The Great Rebellion" (1864).
