(1814-1866), commanded a brigade at Buena Vista in the Mexican War. He represented Indiana in the U. S. Congress as a Democrat from 1853 to 1855. He was a leader of the Free-Soil party and prominent in the Kansas disturbances from 1855 to 1859. He represented Kansas in the U. S. Senate as a Republican from 1861 to 1866.
