A name given to vomiting of black matter, ordinarily succeeded by evacuations of the same character. It seems to be often a variety of haematemesis. The Black Vomit in yellow fever is owing to a morbid secretion from the lining membrane of the stomach and small intestines mixed with blood. Melaena also signifies hemorrhage from the intestines.
