A Russian novelist; born at Riazan, 1825; died at Peterh of, July 2, 1889. A prolific writer, her best works were: "Anna Mikhailovna" (1850); "Waiting for Something Better"; the romance "The Country Teacher"; "The Great Bear", the last particularly having a pronounced success. She wrote also good short stories and published poetry. ("Works", 6 vols., 1859.)
