A test for indican in the urine, which resembles the Jaffe test. The urine is made slightly acid with acetic acid and then treated with an excess of basic lead acetate. The filtrate is then treated with an equal volume of concentrated hydrochloric acid, which contains a small amount of ferric chlorid, and then shaken vigorously with 2 to 3 c.c. of chloroform. Indigo is formed, which dissolves in the chloroform, giving it a blue tinge.
