A Portuguese poet; born in Lisbon, April 29, 1724; died there, Nov. 10, 1772. As a lyric poet he stands very high; while his satires, odes, and epistles,- upon the models of Horace,-are dainty and spiritual. He also wrote successful dramas. The Portuguese esteem him for the perfection with which he employed their language in his works. The "Hymn to Dido" is one of his most popular productions. He was arrested for a personal satire, and died in prison after a long captivity.
