Burnet saxifrage, or pimpernel; a perennial species growing throughout Europe and in Asia. The root is considered diaphoretic, diuretic, and stomachic. It has an aromatic but disagreeable odor, and a pungent, acrid, sweetish taste. It yields a volatile oil of penetrating odor and biting taste; it also contains an acrid resin. The herb and seed also were formerly official, pimple. A small rounded tumor of the skin, usually reddened. [Ang.-Sax.]
