-
A deposition made by a physician or surgeon, to prove the condition of a person, the nature of a disease, the existence or non-existence of pregnancy, sudden or violent death, etc. Formerly, there were the Rapports denonciatifs, made at the desire of the injured or their friends, and intended to point out to the judges the details of the crime or misdemeanor, - the Rapports provisoires, the object of which was to obtain provisions for the injured individual, both as regarded food and medicine, and to defray the expenses of prosecution; -and Rapports mixtes, or those which were both denonciatifs and provisoires. At present, reports or depositions are generally divided into judiciary, or those which serve to throw light on the subject matter of any civil or criminal cause; and administrative, which afford information on subjects relating to any branch of the public administration, as on the nuisance, or otherwise, of certain establishments, the character of any epidemic, etc.
