A Dutch poet; born at Amsterdam, 1622 or 1626; died at Perugia, May 16, 1669. He is an imitator of Vondel, and one of the foremost Dutch poets of his time. He went to Italy and lived for many years in Rome, where he wrote his finest poems. His most famous work is "The Plague at Naples", and the next in importance "The Eve of St. Bartholomew", both epics.
