An English dialect poet; born in Carlisle, Feb. 1, 1770; died there, Sept. 26, 1833. He was a mill hand who produced delightfully humorous and gracefully pathetic verse in his native Cumbrian dialect; typical examples being "The Impatient Lass", "Lucy Gray", and "The Lass abuin Thirty".
