An ancient school of medicine at Salerno in Italy. It was established by Charlemagne, in 802; and was the first Christian university at which medicine was taught. It was much celebrated, especially in the 12th century. The work on hygiene, "De Conservanda Valetudine," which bears its name, has passed through several editions in various languages. It is supposed to have been written by John of Milan, in 1100, and is in Leonine verses.
