[L.] Sidereal time is time reckoned by the diurnal motion of the stars, or more strictly by that of the (mean) first point of Aries, just as ordinary (mean) time is kept by the motion of the (mean) sun. A S. clock is regulated to show the sidereal time of any instant: e.g. it shows 3 hrs. when the first point of Aries is 45 or 3 hrs. west of the meridian. (For S. day, vide Day; for S. year, vide Year.)
