-
A celebrated Greek lyric poet; born in the island of Ceos, about 556 B. C.; died about 468. He was at the height of his fame at the time of the Persian war, and celebrated the heroes of that struggle and their feats. Of his famous "Epigrams", a good many have come down to us; but of his Elegies, Dirges, Epinikia, Dithyrambs, Hymns, and Paeans, we have but fragments.
