[Gr.] (Rhet.) General truths relating to the various subjects, in art, science, jurisprudence, etc., which may be dealt with by the orator. These were committed to memory, and the speaker was thus supposed to be furnished with a store of commonplaces, from which he could be at no loss to draw. Many of these Topics are practically Axioms.
