(1786-1870), was a member of the New York Legislature from 1820 to 1822. He represented New York in the U.S. Congress as a Democrat from 1825 to 1833, and was a State Senator from 1838 to 1841. He wrote "The Bucktail Bards," a series of political pamphlets; "Discourses on American History, Arts and Literature;" "The American Scholar," and was joint editor of the Talisman.
