A French poet; born in the Isle of Bourbon, Feb. 6, 1753; died at Paris, Dec. 5, 1814. He won celebrity through his volume of "Erotic Poems", which first appeared in incomplete form 1778, completed 1781: Voltaire saluted him, "My dear Tibullus". In 1799 he published "The War of the Gods", afterward enlarged and named "The Christianide": it is a cynical and impious attack upon all religions. He published (1805) "The Stolen Portfolio", containing "Venus's Disguises", "Gallantries of the Bible", "Paradise Lost".
