• The grapevine; a native probably of Caspian regions, but now cultivated under numerous forms in all countries having a mean summer temperature of 66 F. or more. The leaves and tendrils contain tartaric and malic acids, glucose, and cane sugar; they are astringent. The ripe fruits are diuretic and laxative, and their fermented juice constitutes wine. The seeds contain 5 or 6 per cent, of tannin and over 15 per cent, of a bland fixed oil.
