the term applied to a celebrated tariff measure of 1827, because its most important provision was the advancement of the sliding scale, so carefully adjusted in 1824, from 331â„3 to 40 and 45 per cent on all woollen imports. The bill was introduced in the House in February, 1827, but failed in the Senate.
