(1818-1873), was a member of the Illinois Legislature from 1842 to 1849. He represented Illinois in the U. S. Congress as a Whig from 1850 to 1854. He was Governor of the State f om 1860 to 1864, and was active in the support of the Union. He represented Illinois in the U. S. Senate from 1865 to 1871.
