An American editor, compiler, and author; born in Philadelphia, Aug. 1, 1842; died in Short Hills, N. J., Nov. 30, 1894. He was at one time connected with the Christian Union and New York Commercial Advertiser; became one of the secretaries of the United States Centennial Commission; and since 1882 had been engaged editorially in the revision of the Webster "International Dictionary". He published: "Quatre Bras, Ligny, and Waterloo" (1882); "A Condensed Etymological Dictionary of the English Language" (1884).
